How to Measure & Put On Dog Boots

Measuring Your Dog's Paws for the Right Fit

Ensuring a proper fit for your dog's boots is crucial for their comfort and mobility. Here's how to accurately measure your dog's paws:

Important Tips:

  • Measure the entire part of the paw that touches the floor, from the back paw pad to the edge of the toenail.
  • Measure while your dog is standing to get a more accurate measurement.

Methods:

  • Paper Method: Have your dog stand on a blank piece of paper. Mark the front and back of the paw (including the toenail) to measure length. Repeat on the left and right sides for width.
  • Ruler or Tape Measure: Hold a ruler or tape measure on the bottom of your dog's paw to measure length and width, including the toenail.
  • Ruler on the Floor: Place a ruler on the floor and let your dog stand on it to measure.
  • Wet Paw Method: Wet your dog's paw and press it onto a blank piece of paper. Measure the length and width of the impression, including the toenail.

    Putting On Dog Shoes

Follow these steps to ensure your dog's shoes fit snugly and comfortably:

    • Dog Standing: Put the shoes on while your dog is standing. This ensures a secure fit when the dog's weight is fully on the paws.
    • Open the Shoe: Fully open the shoe before placing the dog's paw into it, ensuring the dewclaws are included (if applicable) for comfort.
    • Assist with Finger: Use your finger as a shoe horn at the back of the shoe to guide the paw to the front.
    • Check Placement: Run your finger through the shoe to ensure the paw is correctly positioned at the front.
    • Squeeze and Check: While the dog stands, gently squeeze the front of the shoe to feel for the toes, ensuring the paw is at the front.
    • Lift Opposite Leg: Lift the opposite leg to force the dog to put full weight into the shoe. Put the leg down before closing the shoe.
    • Strap Snugly: With the dog standing, zip, tie, or strap the shoe closed snugly. Tuck in all fur.

Tip for Small Dogs: Elevate small dogs on a counter or table to put on shoes, as they might get confused and think it's playtime otherwise.

Getting Your Dog Used to New Dog Booties

    • Dog footwear is new for most dogs, and they may need time to adjust.
    • Let your dog engage in their favorite activity immediately after wearing booties to distract them from the shoes.
    • After 10-15 minutes, check closures to ensure a secure fit during the "break-in" period.
    • Gradually acclimate your dog to the booties during daily walks.

Important: Do not leave your dog unattended while wearing boots. Dogs sweat through their paws, so avoid extended wear to prevent irritation or overheating.

Tip: Start by putting shoes on the front paws first before transitioning to all four paws. This helps your dog get used to the new footwear gradually.
